Your help is needed -- call your legislators to stop cuts to the Renters' Credit during state budget balancing

Brief history on the Renters' Credit cut.

  • In the past, Governor Pawlenty has repeatedly proposed cuts to the Renters' Credit, and the legislature has generally rejected those cuts.
  • Last year, the governor implemented a 27 percent cut to the Renters' Credit in 2010 through his unallotment process. As a result, many taxpayers have seen smaller refunds.
  • On May 4, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the governor overstepped his authority by making cuts through unallotment. That opened up the possibility of reversing the cut.
  • On May 10, the legislature put out a bill to balance the budget and respond to the unallotment court case. That bill confirmed the cut to the Renters’ Credit in 2010 that happened under unallotment.
  • The governor has vetoed that budget-balancing bill and negotiations will continue to get to a different solution.

How you can help.

Please make a call to your legislators using the messages below:

  • Last year, the legislature rejected the governor’s cuts to the Renters’ Credit.
  • The budget-balancing bill that was before the legislature would ratify the governor’s unallotment cut, impacting nearly 300,000 low- and moderate-income households.
